Governor Ted Kulongoski and Oregon's Department of Consumer and Business Services has launched a Web site to address the concerns of Oregonians who are worried about the security of their finances.
The website – at http://egov.oregon. gov/DCBS/safe_money.shtml – addresses common questions about bank and credit union deposits, insurance policies, brokerage accounts, mortgages, and other investment areas. It also includes links to state and federal financial regulators and other resources.
In addition to developing the Web page, the Department of Consumer and Business Services is taking many steps to better protect consumers during these uncertain economic times.
The department also is continuing to provide homeowners facing foreclosure with information and counseling resources to help them stay in their home.
Annual AIDS Walk-a-thon
More than 10,000 walkers are expected to participate in the 22nd annual AIDS Walk Portland at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. A Cascade AIDS Project benefit. The event starts. The course starts and ends at Pioneer Courthouse Square.
The benefit raises funds for HIV/AIDS services, public education, and prevention and outreach efforts to youth and adults most at risk for contracting HIV. Walkers also honor those living with HIV/AIDS and remember those lost to the disease.
Since its incorporation in 1986, CAP's AIDS Walk has raised more than $3.75 million.
Speakers at the morning event will include Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden, Mayor-elect Sam Adams, and CAP's new Executive Director Michael Kaplan.
Key issues to be addressed by the speakers include the Early Treatment of HIV Act, sponsored by Senators Smith and Clinton and the adopted Oregon Administrative Rule regarding human sexuality education, and where we are as a community with HIV/AIDS today.
In addition, the Bus Project will be present to register voters on the spot, and HIV testing information will be available.
Beneficiaries of the funds raised by AIDS Walk Portland include many different organizations.
Food Stars Sought
The Food Network is holding a Portland casting call for its reality series The Next Food Network Star. The Open Casting Call on Oct. 23rd will be held at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront, 1401 SW Naito Parkway. Applicants should bring an application, photograph and resume and/or bio to the auditions, which will allow them to meet with network casting directors.
The recently completed fourth season of Star was the highest-rated series in Food Network history and the program is looking for outstanding chefs and home cooks to join the ranks of past winners like Guy Fieri and the newly-crowned Aaron McCargo Jr. to compete for the opportunity to win his or her own Food Network series. The show's producers say they are looking for people who are passionate about cooking, and knowledgeable about food.
If they can't make it that day, applicants have until Friday, Oct. 31, to send in a three-minute audition video explaining why they should be the Food Network's newest star. For applications and contest rules, visit www.FoodNetwork.com/star.
